Using the NIH Stroke Scale

Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States and the number one cause of permanent disability. As medical research has advanced, it has been recognized that time is of the essence when treating clients with stroke. It is imperative to quickly and accurately assess a client suffering stroke symptoms to determine the best plan of care to maximize outcomes.

The purpose/goal of this course is to review the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) objective assessment tool and describe how to use it when assessing a client for stroke.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will do the following:
•        Describe the origins of and defined standards of use for the NIHSS.
•        Describe each of the elements of the NIHSS.
•        Explain how to score each item of the scale when assessing the neurological impairments in clients with suspected stroke.
