Respiratory Alterations in the Pediatric Client
by Nursing CE Catalog
The respiratory system facilitates gas exchange in the body. A patent airway
is essential. Neurochemicals regulate the rate, depth, and rhythm of breathing and signal the respiratory muscles to contract and expand the thoracic cavity, facilitating gas exchange so the system can function effectively.

A respiratory system dysfunction in infants and young children is concerning since these groups are particularly vulnerable because of specific age-related physical differences.

The purpose/goal of this course is to describe age-related physical differences in the respiratory system of pediatric clients, examine varying respiratory alterations that occur in infants and children, and explore the role of the nurse in optimizing the health of the pediatric population.
