Understanding Mechanical Ventilation

Contact Hours: 2.1 Course Description: This module provides an overview of mechanical ventilation, including manifestations of respiratory failure, endotracheal tube care, sedation and analgesia for the intubated patient, and airway protection. It also reviews ventilator equipment and its settings, as well as the principles of mechanical ventilation. Course Objectives:Describe respiratory failure and the manifestations of an inability to oxygenate and/or ventilate
Explain the parameters of an airway protection assessment
Differentiate airway resistance, gas exchange impediments, and the inability to ventilate
Explain the principles and goals of mechanical ventilation and modes of ventilation
Differentiate ventilator alarms, along with troubleshooting tips for each
Describe endotracheal tube care and the importance of maintaining oral hygiene
Discuss the importance of sedation and analgesia for the intubated patient This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the PA State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
