Contact Hours: 1.2 Course Description: Shift workers in healthcare face considerable challenges with individual health, lifestyles, family, and social life. Shift work has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal disorders, obesity, and diabetes. These issues subsequently result in decreased productivity, increased absenteeism, medical errors, and workplace accidents. Tips for proper sleep, nutrition, and lifestyle modifications are also discussed. Course Objectives:Describe lifestyle challenges and health concerns faced by the shift worker in healthcare
Briefly discuss health risks and risk reduction strategies associated with shift work
Explain how the sleep-wake cycle is affected by shift work
Summarize tips for proper sleep and nutrition
Explain how shift work affects the social well-being of the worker and their family
Identify risks for errors associated with shift work
Discuss interventions and strategies that employers can offer to reduce the extra costs associated with shift work fatigue and other health issues This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the PA State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
