No matter what the reason is it can cause problems for your business if you’re not prepared ahead of time. You must be prepared, because unless it’s a planned vacation, time off doesn’t usually come with a notice of any kind. With that said, you must know in advance how you’ll handle any type of situation. When you’re prepared and know the steps needed to handle the time they’re away, your business won’t suffer.

Each time your employees take time off things will need to be covered. Each situation may be different and require different types of solutions. Here are a few suggestions for you to consider when you’re planning for time away for your employees.

1. Sick time

Sick time is usually a day or two at a time and so depending on the job very little may be required. You may have certain tasks that need to be handled, but other than that, nothing else will need to be done. This is the easiest time away from work to handle, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be difficult to handle.

2. Vacation time

Vacation time can be anywhere from a few hours a day to days, weeks, or months at a time and that can cause problems if it’s not handled the correct way. If it’s not handled you’ll find your business will suffer in multiple ways. You may find having someone else cover the tasks that must be done will be enough, but if you find that’s not enough you may need to bring in a temporary worker to cover the position.

3. Long term illness

Whether the long term illness is a family member of your employee or your employee it can cause a lot problems for your business if you don’t handle it properly. The most important thing to remember is you need to make your employee feel ok about the situation they’re in and that means you need to assure them they’ll have a job to come back to when the situation is over. In the meantime, you need to find a way to cover the job that this person currently handles and that may be a temporary employee or rearranging tasks so everyone can help cover that position until the employee can come back.

Employee moral is important and when you run a business and it’s even more important when you need to handle employees being out of the office. If employees are afraid they’ll be replaced when they take vacation or sick time they’ll be unhappy and afraid all the time. While you need to make sure your business runs smoothly all the time, having scared employees is not good, so the best way to handle it is to juggle tasks around so everyone helps or hire a temporary person to help you make it work.
