When you’re looking for a new job, a resume is the most important thing to have with you when you fill out applications or go on interviews. A resume shows the employer what you’re capable of doing, what your experiences are, and how you can help businesses success. While you can do that on applications and your interview, a resume gives the employer the ability to see these things after you’ve left the office.
There are certain things that should and should not be included in your resume. When you know exactly what it needs to say, you’ll have the best resume and the chances of getting a new job will be much higher than they would be if you didn’t write it correctly. Here are tips for what to include in your resume.
Your resume needs to be detailed, but not a book. When you print it, it should be on letter size paper and the margins shouldn’t be any smaller than a half inch all the way around. Your font should be readable and shouldn’t be too large or too small. Times New Roman or Arial 12 point would well with resumes. Using white paper with black font is best. Even though you want things to stand out on your resume, it’s not a good idea to bold or underline things.
You’ll want to make sure your name, address, phone number, and email address are at the top of your resume. The next section on your resume is your job history. You’ll want to list your current job first and go down the list from there. It’s best to go back three jobs or 10 years if you have the ability. You’ll need to include the business name, your job title, list of duties you performed, the dates you worked there, your manager’s name, and a contact phone number.
The next section on your resume is where you list all of the duties you can perform. Depending on the number of jobs you’ve had, the number of titles you’ve had, etc. the list of tasks you can do may be a lot different than what you listed with each job you listed above. The reference section is at the end of your resume. You can list your references or you can say, “References are available upon request.” You’ll need to take the length of your resume before you decide if you’re going to list them or not. It’s important to remember your resume needs to be one page in length.
