Employee Training In 2011Time tracking is one of the most difficult things to do as a business owner. Depending on the size of your business and how many employees you have, it may be important to have a time clock to help you keep track of the hours.

No matter how much you feel like you can trust your employees, you just never know. It’s important to remember some people don’t handle stress and bad news well and this may be the perfect time to falsify the hours. When this happens more pay is received or fewer hours are worked.

There are basically three ways to handle time tracking. Just like anything else, you must trust your employees or you’ll always wonder if the hours are true and accurate. The first way is to allow your employees to fill out a timesheet and keep track of the hours themselves. This way is one of the easiest to falsify, so it’s one that a lot of businesses are steering clear of. While this does happen, a lot of small businesses are going this route because they don’t have money to spend on software or machines.

The next way is to use an actual time clock. This way requires you to have timecards on hand and your employees use those cards to slip them in and out of a machine. This machine will document the in and out time and depending on the machine may keep track of the hours on a computer. While these clocks may be expensive, you know the hours will be accurate and you won’t have to worry about falsified hours.

The last way to keep track of hours worked is to use a software program. These are generally found on a computer that everyone has access to or they can be on a local server that all computers have access to. The general computer is usually the way to go because it eliminates the need for an employee to wait to clock in until a computer is up and running.

Keeping track of time is not only important for you, but also for your employees. It’s not good to not have accurate hours, so using one of these three methods is a must or your records won’t be correct and either you’ll end up paying more than what’s necessary or your employees will be short if they document the wrong hours. The best thing you can do for your business and for your employees is to find an accurate way to keep track of the hours.
